Raingutter Boat Racing - How To Make A Fast Regatta Boat

Making Balsa Raingutter Boat Kits

These instructions are for putting the Sparks and Upper Club boat kits together. These boats can be made very fast and look great! The cost each kit is about $2.00. These instructions produce 50 kits. It should take only a couple hours at most.

Preparation

Materials Optional Tools
  • 25 sheets of 1/8" x 6" x 36" balsa wood (a sheet costs about $3.50); Sometimes you can make a deal with a hobby or hardware store to get it cheaper
  • Paper Lunch bags
  • 100 index cards
  • Instruction sheets - 5 cents a copy
  • Utility knife (the kind with a thick handle and retractable blade) or hobby knife
  • Ruler
  • Draftsman's triangle
  • Ink pen

Assembly

All the work is cutting and filling a paper bag! You will cut the balsa sheets in half.

  1. Measure 18 inches to the center of each balsa board and cut using the knife and triangle.
  2. For each kit, place two index cards on a folded instruction sheet and put that on a 1/2 balsa sheet.
  3. Place each stack into a lunch bag. Leave the top open.
  4. Place all kit bags in a couple of grocery bags for transport.
